DRILLS & HELPFUL VIDEOS

SHOOTING PRINCIPLES

DOUBLE BOX PASSING

  • Shooting for success

    PRINCIPLES

Keep Hands in a comfortable position with the stick slightly vertical

Drive off your back foot, transferring weight to front

Release your top hand, think about driving your control Hand knuckles into the ground

Change Planes - Stick head stays high, but shoot low, is very hard for a goalie to track and save

  • In this drill, we are working on both short and long passing

    SET UP

Create 2 boxes in front of the gaol area. One that is about 8x8 and an outside box that is 20x20. Split the team into 2 groups, and each group will work at one box at a time. After 2 minutes both groups change directions.. after 4 minutes flip so the players inside work the outside box, and players on outside go inside box.

    PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

Inside touch passes and quick sticks, follow your pass

Outside long passes will running the perimeter - Cut to ball, roll to outside, pass and follow

4V4 WITH 4 GAME

  • This a fun drill that will get the kids competing and making decisions!

    SET UP

Set up 3 goals with cones. Each player defends a goal. Coach spreads all the balls throughout the playing area. On the whistle players can go find a ball, and try to score on one of the other 2 goals. In order to score, the player must run the ball through the cones. If a player leaves their goal to go score, they must hustle to get back and protect!

    PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

See spacing opportunities to go score.

Don’t let opponents run through your goal using good defense

ZOMBIE TAG

  • This is a fun game for teamwork and stick handling!

    SET UP

Every player has a ball, and create a small sided field (use cones if needed). The coached are the zombies, and walk around like so! The players must run and cradle to avoid coach. If a player is tagged by a coach, they freeze. Their teammates can unfreeze them by rolling a ball through their teammates leg, and scooping it back up!

    PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

    Stick handling!

    Teamwork

PROGRESSIONS - Add in if a player drops their ball while cradling, they are now frozen

  • This game works on ground balls and hustle.

    SET UP

Start all players on the midline. If there is a total of 9 players, we start with 8 balls. Spread those 9 balls out in a playing area. On coaches whistle, players must run to get a ball, and carry it back to the line where they started. The 1 player who doesn’t get a ball, can try to defends and steal another players, but if they aren’t successful, they will remain OUT of the game. Now you have 8 players, use 7 balls and same rules apply. Do this until you have 2 players / 1 ball.. winning player wins the game!

    PRINCIPLES AND COACHING POINTS

Run to get a ground ball!

    Good ground ball form

    Escape from pressure and HUSTLE!

LEVELS GAME

DOUBLE UP GAME

MUSICAL GB’S GAMES

  • This is a fun, competitive small area game for players. They can gain points by making passes on the opposite sides of the field & by scoring goals. We are stressing in this drill for players to keep their heads up and finding teammates cross field when the defense is helping in the middle.

    SET UP

Set up a small field game with goals about 20 yards away. Using cones, create a line going straight down the middle of the field, from goal to goal. Teams play 3 v 3 and can score 1 point for making a clean pass across the line or by scoring a goal. If a player catches cross field, shoots, and scores, that would be 2 points. The goal is for players with the ball to find teammates cross field for a quick shot.

    PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

    Encourage 2 point plays

    Don’t let defense Cheat

Move off ball to open space

    PROGRESSIONS

    2v2, 3v3, or 4v4

    Give different values for goals

NUMBERS GAME

  • This Is a great competitive drill that focuses on scoring and competing

    SET UP

Split the group into 2 teams. Set defensive team up in a single line on the lower box are, and the offense in the high wing area. Coach calls a number, that is how many players come out each play (3 O and 2 D as an example, 3v2). If the offense scores, that’s 1 point. If the offense doesn’t score for any reason, that’s 1 point for the defense. Keep score, play for 4 minutes, than switch

    PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

Use different situations like 2v2, 2v1, 4v3 etc..

    PROGRESSIONS

Call out more Defense than offense, and give Offense 2 points if they score. Example 3 D and 2 O

  • This drill will keep goalies and players on their toes, having to read and react to changing situations.

    SET UP

Set up a game with 1 goal in the crease, and another about 25 yards away facing the same direction. The game will be a 2V2, snd started when a coach rolls the ball in. The winning team can score on either cage, and can use coaches as bumpers. If the defense wins the ball, they must get it to a bumper before they can try and score.

    PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

    2v2 or 3v3

Play from in front and behind cage

SIXES GAME

  • Full field gameplay

    SET UP

Bring the goals up to retaining boxes and split the teams into 2 groups, play 5V5 with a Goalie (6v6). Start with a face off, and play until a goal is scored. There are no additional face-offs, if a goal is scored, team clear it. If there is a shot out of bounds, it goes to the defensive team. Players sub on the fly like hockey.

    PRINCIPLES AND COACHING POINTS

    Free Play

When game slow, coaches don’t stop play, but advance it with a ground ball or challenge

Make. 4v4 + Goalie for more spacing
