SHOOTING PRINCIPLES

PARTNER PASSING

  • Shooting for success

    PRINCIPLES

Keep Hands in a comfortable position with the stick slightly vertical

Drive off your back foot, transferring weight to front

Release your top hand, think about driving your control Hand knuckles into the ground

Change Planes - Stick head stays high, but shoot low, is very hard for a goalie to track and save

  • To lay a foundation for stick work and passing, we want to set up a drill that makes it simple for kids to understand the principles behind passing and catching.

    SET UP

Put players in group of 2, about 5 yards apart. Have kids start on one knee. If player is right handed, right knee would be down.. Left handed, left knee down.

We want to emphasis on our hand positioning on stick here. The anchor hand stays is position, but the control hand should be about half way up the lacrosse stick. Players will make passes back and forth

    - When passing, make sure the hands/elbows are up, as we are trying to teach how to isolate the - upper body making a pass, by turning our shoulders.

Catching the ball, get the control hand back up to the top of the shaft, as it makes it easier to catch.

    PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

    PROGRESSIONS

    - Right to Left - Right to Right - Left to Left

    - Left to Right

4 PLAYER LINE DRILLS

  • This is a great drill to focus on Ground Balls and Stick Control. We do this drill so players focus on the Principles of Ground Balls and Stick Protection after gaining possession.

    SET UP

Put players in groups of 4 or 5 on the sidelines facing the middle of the field. Groups should be at minimum 15-20 yards apart from each.

In front one each line is a cone 10 Yards Away. A coach or player holds a stick about waist high, over the ball. Player (a) must scoop the ball, going under the stick. After possession, the player with ball carries and curls around the cone 10 yds

    - Get Low to Scoop the Ball

    - Scoop and bring the stick close to body “Kiss the Stick”

    - Carry the Ball around the cone, making sure stick stays to the outside (Imagine a defender on us)

    PROGRESSIONS

    - Have Player hold stick over the ball directly to start to scoop through with a little pressure.

    - Have player make a light check on stick head

1 V 1 > 2 v 1 GROUND BALLS

  • Use this drill to add in more game-like competition, where the players can now focus on ground balls, finding the open teammate, and working on their shooting.

    SET UP

Split the team up into 2 teams, and put 2 lines on both wings, and up top. Coach starts by rolling the ball out for a 1v1 ground ball for 1 line. The players compete, and the winning team tries to score. After the score, coach rolls a ball into a new player of the same color team that scored the 1v1 goal, and now they play 2v1 to the goal.

    PRINCIPLES AND COACHING POINTS

Win the Ground Ball and Score

Offense in 2v1, player with ball draw the defender and pass it

Offense Off ball cutting to open pace

Defense, play zone like D with stick UP in passing lanes.

FIND THE SPACE

  • Have a player with the ball face the sideline with a defender about stick length away. On whistle, the defender picks a side as the offense turns. The offense must find the space, and take it.

  • Use this drill to add in more competition where the players can now focus on ground balls & shooting

    SET UP

Split group up unto 2 teams. Set up 2 goals, on both sides of the cage. If you only have 1 goal, that’s fine, coaches must keep count how many each team scores. Put all the balls in a general area on the ground, about 10 yards away. On coaches whistle, the first player in line for each team, has to scoop a ball, and go score. After they shoot, they must tag their next teammate In line to go, like a relay race. The team with the most goals, wins. Play until the balls run out. You can do best of 3 or 5 games, they will enjoy this!

    PRINCIPLES AND COACHING POINTS

Run to get a ground ball!

    Good ground ball form

    Shooting form (overhand)
