DRILLS & HELPFUL VIDEOS

SHOOTING PRINCIPLES

PASSING THE BALL

  • Shooting for success

    PRINCIPLES

Keep Hands in a comfortable position with the stick slightly vertical

Drive off your back foot, transferring weight to front

Release your top hand, think about driving your control Hand knuckles into the ground

Change Planes - Stick head stays high, but shoot low, is very hard for a goalie to track and save

TEAM SPACING

  • This is a great drill to focus on Ground Balls and Stick Control. We do this drill so players focus on the Principles of Ground Balls and Stick Protection after gaining possession.

    SET UP

Put players in groups of 4 or 5 on the sidelines facing the middle of the field. Groups should be at minimum 15-20 yards apart from each.

In front one each line is a cone 10 Yards Away. A coach or player holds a stick about waist high, over the ball. Player (a) must scoop the ball, going under the stick. After possession, the player with ball carries and curls around the cone 10 yds

    - Get Low to Scoop the Ball

    - Scoop and bring the stick close to body “Kiss the Stick”

    - Carry the Ball around the cone, making sure stick stays to the outside (Imagine a defender on us)

    PROGRESSIONS

    - Have Player hold stick over the ball directly to start to scoop through with a little pressure.

    - Have player make a light check on stick head

MUSICAL GROUNDBALLS GAME

  • This is a fun game for players to seek ground balls and open space

    SET UP

If you want to run in 2 groups, you can. If you have 15 players in a group, for example, line all the players up side to side on the midfield line. Coach will put 14 balls out in front of the players through the restraining area. On the whistle, players must run and find a ground ball, and carry it back to the midline where they're started. The 1 Player who didn’t get a ball returned, is now out. 14 players would go next with 13 balls. Do this until 1 player wins.

    PRINCIPLES AND COACHING POINTS

Find the open ground ball and get control / find the open space to return

    Progressions

If you don’t want 1 player out at a time, you can use 10 balls with 15 players, so 5 players as a group would not make it to next round.

  • Players will now focus on the individual match ups and learning how to play and defend space.

    SET UP

Create 2-3 10x10 boxes using cones. Have 2 players lined up 5 yards away, and roll a ground ball out in front. The winning player must keep the ball away from their opponent inside the box. Once a coach blows whistle, you can have the offensive player run to the goal and take a shot!

    PRINCIPLES AND COACHING POINTS

Offense - Move into space running away from defender and protecting stick

Defense - Try to take the ball away, or drive outside the box.

Progressions - Take defenders stick away if they are struggling on offense. / Make the field smaller for a bigger offensive challenge

3V3 SCOOP AND CHASE

1 V 1 GROUNDBALLS

  • This is a great game to get players to compete and finish practice with some fun!

    SET UP

Split players up into two teams and organize on the side of the field with 3 lines of each, alternating. 3 players from each team are in to start. Coach initiates with a live ground ball. The winning team must pass the ball to a coach before they can go score. After a team scores, reset. If goalie makes a save, or the defense takes the ball away, have the defense clear the ball to the midfield line

    PRINCIPLES AND COACHING POINTS

Ground Balls - Scoop Through and run way from pressure

Finding Open Space on Offense both dodging and off ball.

Playing On ball and Off Ball defense.

CLEARING THE BALL, We want to open up the field with players going to sidelines, and then cutting through the middle to get passes from teammates.

PROGRESSIONS - GO 2 V2 WITH YOUNGER PLAYERS

3v2 KEEP AWAY

  • Put 3 offensive players on the outside, and 3 defenders inside. The Offense must play keep away by finding space and getting open for each other. The defense must work together playing the ball and backside offense, keeping sticks in the air trying to knock down passes.

    Progressions

Make field bigger to be easier on the offense

make field smaller to make it harder
