DRILLS & HELPFUL VIDEOS

SHOOTING PRINCIPLES

PASSING THE BALL

  • Shooting for success

    PRINCIPLES

Keep Hands in a comfortable position with the stick slightly vertical

Drive off your back foot, transferring weight to front

Release your top hand, think about driving your control Hand knuckles into the ground

Change Planes - Stick head stays high, but shoot low, is very hard for a goalie to track and save

4 PLAYER LINE PASSING

  • Establishing a proper way to throw and catch is paramount especially while moving This is a basic drill that the efficiency can be determined just by how we set up the drills and what we expect the players to do

    SET UP

Put players on sideline in lines of 4 with a cone about 8 yards away from line. The first player in line starts and carries the ball cradling around the cone, and makes a pass to teammate. Continue and add in strong and weak hand challenges!

    PRINCIPLES AND COACHING POINTS

Players must keep stick up by ear giving teammate a target to pass to.

    Carry and cradle the ball

Small groups, so reinforce the catching and throwing parts!

GB KEEP AWAY GAME

  • We are building off week 3, adding more players to the mix.

    SET UP

Build a box in the retraining area using cones that are 15-20 yards apart. Put players into 2 teams, and make 3 lines of each on the sideline alternating. Coach rolls a live 3v3 ground ball in. Players in line must pay attention, whichever line wins GB, another players comes in to play 4v3. They play keep away until coach blows the whistle, then they can attack the goal. If the Defense breaks the play, they can go right to the gaol and try to score, they don’t need to wait for whistle.

    PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

Communicate! Yell “BALL” etc.. so offensives teammates can find open space

Defense make it hard for player to find open teammate (STICK UP!)

Pay Attention, even players waiting in line!

PROGRESSIONS - Make SPACE SMALLER and Harder to Move Ball

  • This is a fun Groundball drill that engages competition and scoring!

    SET UP

Put players in two groups, for more reps. Set players up in 4 lines on the midfield. The first 4 players are up, coach rolls 2 balls in and its live. If you scoop a ground ball, go to the goal. If you don’t get a GB, chase and play defense!

    PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

    Win the Groundball!

    If no GB, play defense

    Compete!

SCORE VS CLEAR

OFFENSE BOUNCNES

UNEVEN GB GAMES

  • Use the space in front of the goal for this drill to get completions and small field play.

    SET UP

Split the teams into 2 groups, and start 4v4 and have a group of 3 behind the restraining line ready to play. Once the initial 4v4 ends, the team that was on offense, gets set in the house to play defense. The team that finished on defense, goes back in line to wait and play offense. Diagram below shows 3v3, but u12 and u14 should play 4v4 (3 perimeter players and 1 crease)

    PRINCIPLES AND COACHING POINTS

Offense - Use spacing principles to attack the goal

Defense - Find ways to help on and off ball

FOCUS! - Be ready to play offense then defense, changing roles quickly!

    PROGRESSIONS

Play 3v3 for alternative looks and spacing

GENERAL DRILL

  • This drill will focus on offensive dodging/scoring and defensive positioning. If you can use two goals, that’s ideal so there are more reps. In this example, we are using guided defense, but add in a live defender to play true defense, will help both the offensive and defensive players sharpen their skills.

    SET UP

Put a defender a an offensive player back to back in the crease area. Put cones 5 yards apart from each player in opposite directions. The offensive player starts with a ball in stick, and when coach blows whistle, each player runs around their respective cone. The offensive player is trying to dodge and score, while the defender is trying to play the hands of the shooting, and keeping them away from goal. You can point cones in any direction, so players are attacking different parts of the field.

    PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

Offense read the defenders stick and body like we discussed week 2 and attack goal hard.

Defense break break down when approaching player (don’t lunge), and play with legs to stay in between man and goal.

PROGRESSIONS - BUILD TO A 2V2 OR 3V3 / START WITH COACH PASSING BALL IN AFTER CONES.

  • This Is a great competitive drill that focuses on finding and creating space on offense and then on defense when clearing the ball.

    SET UP

The game is a small sized half field. Put players in 2 teams, and start as a 4 v 4 goundball. The team on offense must score on the goalie, while the defense has to clear the ball through certain areas of the field, in between cones. Start the game with a live 2 v 2 ground ball. Each team can score a point, ether on goalie or through clearing points. Flip teams after 1 minute

    PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

On offense, find open space to create scoring opportunities

On defense, find space to clear the ball and get points.

    PROGRESSIONS

Add different defenses cone areas to match your clears points / Play 3v3 for more space

If no goalies, both uses cones for scoring.
