SYL - WEEK 5
PRACTICE FRAMEWORK
This weeks practice is designed to work on our positional skill work. We will focus on defensive and offensive tactics to give us the best tools to beat our opponent. Drills will start in smaller groups and then build into small sided drills/games to execute the concepts we discussed.

DRILLS & HELPFUL VIDEOS
SHOOTING PRINCIPLES
PASSING THE BALL
-
Shooting for success
PRINCIPLES
Keep Hands in a comfortable position with the stick slightly vertical
Drive off your back foot, transferring weight to front
Release your top hand, think about driving your control Hand knuckles into the ground
Change Planes - Stick head stays high, but shoot low, is very hard for a goalie to track and save
RELAY RACE GAME
-
This is a great drill to focus on Ground Balls and Stick Control. We do this drill so players focus on the Principles of Ground Balls and Stick Protection after gaining possession.
SET UP
Put players in groups of 4 or 5 on the sidelines facing the middle of the field. Groups should be at minimum 15-20 yards apart from each.
In front one each line is a cone 10 Yards Away. A coach or player holds a stick about waist high, over the ball. Player (a) must scoop the ball, going under the stick. After possession, the player with ball carries and curls around the cone 10 yds
- Get Low to Scoop the Ball
- Scoop and bring the stick close to body “Kiss the Stick”
- Carry the Ball around the cone, making sure stick stays to the outside (Imagine a defender on us)
PROGRESSIONS
- Have Player hold stick over the ball directly to start to scoop through with a little pressure.
- Have player make a light check on stick head
OWN THE CONE GAME
-
Defense - Own the Cone Drill - Set up an area about 5 yards x 10 yards long using cones. Defense doesn’t use stick, but a player with ball, must try to beat he defender and get past the last center cone. The defense should focus on trying to play hips, stay square, and try to push offense outside the cone zone!
-
Defense - Star Approaches - Set up 5 cones around the cage, and then put one cone in the center. The player inside must approach every cone, and then recover to the crease before they move on to the next cone. Have the next player in line go one 2 cones ahead is completed.
4 PLAYER LINE DRILLS
OFFENSE BOUNCNES
DEFENSE STAR APPROACHES
-
Offense - Bounces with guided defense. Have a player with the ball, and a defender about 5 yards away. Player with ball bounces away from defender, defender approaches, and the offense takes the space to the goal
GENERAL DRILL
-
This drill will focus on offensive dodging/scoring and defensive positioning. If you can use two goals, that’s ideal so there are more reps. In this example, we are using guided defense, but add in a live defender to play true defense, will help both the offensive and defensive players sharpen their skills.
SET UP
Put a defender a an offensive player back to back in the crease area. Put cones 5 yards apart from each player in opposite directions. The offensive player starts with a ball in stick, and when coach blows whistle, each player runs around their respective cone. The offensive player is trying to dodge and score, while the defender is trying to play the hands of the shooting, and keeping them away from goal. You can point cones in any direction, so players are attacking different parts of the field.
PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS
Offense read the defenders stick and body like we discussed week 2 and attack goal hard.
Defense break break down when approaching player (don’t lunge), and play with legs to stay in between man and goal.
PROGRESSIONS - BUILD TO A 2V2 OR 3V3 / START WITH COACH PASSING BALL IN AFTER CONES.
-
This is a great drill to focus on Ground Balls and Stick Control.
A player holds a stick about waist high or right over tha over the ball. Player (a) must scoop the ball, going under the stick. After possession, the player with ball carries and runs around the cone, while being chased by defender. Carry back to line without losing the ball
Coaching Points - Run away from pressure, protecting the stick
