SYL - WEEK 4

PRACTICE FRAMEWORK

This weeks practice is designed to work on taking advantage of uneven opportunities. The game of lacrosse is constantly provided advantages and disadvantages on the field. Players need to be able recognize the situations and make the right decisions. Offense wants to make sure we are passing the ball to find the best scoring opportunity or open teammate. The Defense is trying to work together to guard the HOUSE when there are uneven situations.

DRILLS & HELPFUL VIDEOS

SHOOTING PRINCIPLES

PASSING THE BALL

  • Shooting for success

    PRINCIPLES

Keep Hands in a comfortable position with the stick slightly vertical

Drive off your back foot, transferring weight to front

Release your top hand, think about driving your control Hand knuckles into the ground

Change Planes - Stick head stays high, but shoot low, is very hard for a goalie to track and save

TEAM SPACING

  • This is a great drill to focus on Ground Balls and Stick Control. We do this drill so players focus on the Principles of Ground Balls and Stick Protection after gaining possession.

    SET UP

Put players in groups of 4 or 5 on the sidelines facing the middle of the field. Groups should be at minimum 15-20 yards apart from each.

In front one each line is a cone 10 Yards Away. A coach or player holds a stick about waist high, over the ball. Player (a) must scoop the ball, going under the stick. After possession, the player with ball carries and curls around the cone 10 yds

    - Get Low to Scoop the Ball

    - Scoop and bring the stick close to body “Kiss the Stick”

    - Carry the Ball around the cone, making sure stick stays to the outside (Imagine a defender on us)

    PROGRESSIONS

    - Have Player hold stick over the ball directly to start to scoop through with a little pressure.

    - Have player make a light check on stick head

2 V 2 GB WITH DOUBLE TEAM

  • Unsettled situations usually start with a ground ball win or a double team. This drill focuses on winning the ground ball, and then playing against pressure.

    SET UP

Set up players into two teams and put in lines on side of field alternating colors. Coach rolls out a live ground ball. The losing team must double team the ball. The player who scoops, must run away from pressure to open space, while teammate mirrors him so they can connect on a pass. If they make the pass, defense follows ball to double team again, and offense needs to make 1 more pass, then complete.

    PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

Offense Run away from pressure while teammate moves to open space for help

Defense Double Team the ball, even after the first pass

    Communication, stick work, and movement!

  • This small sided game allows everyone to get in one the competition while coach can adjust how many players are not the field at the same time.

    SET UP

Set up a field about 20 yards long. Use mini nets if no goalie, and have each team line up on the sideline in a single line. Coach will yell how many of team team will come out (2 would mean 2 of each so its a 2 v 2). Players will try to score on the opponents goal, until the coach blows the whistle for a substitution. It should be continuous, so once coach blows second whistle, team on field runs off, and a new ball is rolled in by coach!

READ THE DEFENSE

CONTINUOUS GAME

  • In this Drill, players will focus on both sides of the field, principles for both offense and defense. This drill build recognition and game IQ

    SET UP

Split the teams into 2 groups, and play all even in front of the goal (See below for progressions). Put players on the field in front of the cages, how you would like spaced out. You can do any kinds of team spacing, but to start, put 3 players on the perimeter, and 1 on the crease (Circle-One). Give the ball to one offensive player to start. Have every offensive player face away from coach, and have all D look at coach. Coach will point to the player who is going to be the double team/slide person (don’t let the offense know). The offensive players turn back around ready to play. On coaches whistle, the Defender ON BALL, runs to the sideline and then back in as fast as possible. The Defender coach pointed to, slides to help and play the ball. The offense team must move the ball to the open player. Drill ends on a shot or dead ball. This is a good time to also work on clearing principles, which you can have the defense clear the ball to midline if they take ball away. MAKE A POINT SYSTEM, Goal scores offense gets 1 point. Defense Clears they get 2!

    PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

    Read the slide on offense

Defense stay in the house to help the defender on ball

    PROGRESSIONS

U8 and U10 can start with 3v3 field

U12 and U14 should start 4v4 and built up to 6v6

FLIP IT DRILL

  • This is a great drill for recognition and build up into different situations for the players

    SET UP

Put players into two teams (dark and light) Set up 2 lines of players right about the restraining line. In each line the colors are alternating, and it's mirrored in the other line. Coach picks a color to start on defense (Say Dark), and put in crease. The first two lights player get a ball from coach and play 2 v 1. Once the play ends, the 2 next players come in, but are now dark.. and dark is on 3v2 offense, and 2 light are now on defense (roles changes). Continue drill until 5 v 5 finishes, then restart, and flip who starts on defense.

    PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

Recognition, switching from O to D every play.

Defense - Understand taking away the space and playing man down zone approach. One player on ball, others back protecting the house.

Try to let every rep be 10 seconds max.
